Winter’s Moon by Lise MacTague is an urban paranormal story set in the wolven world of the Five Moons Rising series.

Cassidy Nolan is new to her wolven lifestyle, and agreeing to become Alpha of the North Side pack is a learning curve. As well as finding confidence in her role, she must find out why her sister, the Hunter of Chicago, has disappeared. Members of her own pack have gone missing too.  She will need allies if the forces aiming to destroy them are to be kept a bay.

Snow is a lone wolf, and wanders the country, visiting packs as she goes. For her own reasons she prefers to stay on the road, but this time something is different. Cassidy is different. Will she stick around to help the new Alpha? Sometimes the needs of the group come first, and Snow must decide if there’s enough to keep her in one place.

Pros And My Favourite Parts

Lise MacTague’s writing is wonderfully descriptive, and the story is beautifully built up, allowing the reader to become immersed in the wolven world she has created. As someone new to this series, I had no problem understanding the backstory to the events. I particularly enjoyed the dynamics between the older and wiser Snow and the newbie Cassidy. The author explored emotions and how they are dealt with when the characters have different expectations.

I must also mention the exquisitely sexy and alluring Carla, the Vampire Lord of Chicago. What a character! She adds a deliciously wicked hint of naughtiness and one never knows whether to trust her or not. The interactions between the various wolven packs and the other non-human characters elevate the story, and make me determined to read the entire series.

Cons And Heads Up

There are descriptions of brutal attacks by the wolven characters.

The Conclusion

As a fan of shifter novels I am delighted to have found a series where the author has taken the time to create a compelling and well thought out alternative reality. I appreciated the world building, and found myself eased into it gradually. She built it up perfectly, leaving me begging for more.  In the first two-thirds of the novel she takes time to craft the story and let us get to know the characters and their idiosyncrasies. The last third is all out action and high-octane.

Alphas arent taught, not really. Sometimes a Beta might be groomed to take over from an Alpha, but thats as close as it gets. No, theyre part of a pack; if they arent born into one, they join it. They learn what its like to be a member. They take on more responsibility. They figure out what safety looks like for the pack. Then one day, they challenge the Alpha, or they split off with wolven whore looking for a change. Your situation is unprecedented.
