The Perfect Match by Milena McKayThe Perfect Match by Milena McKay is a Valentine’s novella about finding your forever person and having the courage to claim your happily ever after.

Abby Angellini’s life is looking up. Her career as a costume designer may not be going anywhere, but fresh out of the Cupid’s Academy, she’s ready to put her quiver and arrows to good use. She’s a hopeful romantic and loves watching desire bloom between two people. As a junior cupid she’s only shot a handful of arrows. She knows her goal is helping people find their perfect match, but she’s not sure what’s the best approach. Should she fire countless arrows and rely on the law of large numbers to make as many matches as possible or should she take a more studied approach and go for accuracy over quantity?

Sabine Goddard is the most successful working cupid. At the annual Cupid’s Convention in Las Vegas, she’s been crowned Queen of the Perfect Match, ten years running. Her ratio of arrows shot, and perfect matches made is 100%. She’s unphased by her celebrity status in the cupid world and takes much more pride in her corporate success in finance. In her high-rise office, making decisions that generate millions of dollars, surrounded by employees who both admire and fear her – that’s where she feels most comfortable.

You see, Sabine has lost confidence in her role as a cupid. After her own perfect match failed and left her heartbroken and confused, she’s considering hanging up her quiver.

At this year’s Cupid’s Convention, Abby runs into her idol. After a booking disaster, she’s left with no choice but to share her room with the one and only Queen of the Perfect Match, Sabine Goddard. Both women have a lot of feelings about this. Abby’s thrilled; Sabine is most decidedly not.

When sparks fly, it’s clear there’s oodles of chemistry between these two women. Opposites do in fact attract and, their age difference just makes things all the more incendiary. There’s only one clear action for Sabine to take at the end of the convention, leave and never see Abby again.

The following year Abby and Sabine run into each other at the same convention. This year there’s a new twist. Sabine’s ex-wife is there with her new wife and Sabine’s beside herself. With quick thinking, Abby poses as Sabine’s girlfriend so Sabine can save face. The close proximity between these two women makes it impossible for them to ignore their feelings. Again, Sabine does what she does best. With just a few caustic comments and carefully placed biting observations, Abby packs her bags and heads to the airport to get as far away from Sabine as she can.

Is Sabine willing to pursue what might be her true perfect match, or will her painful past continue to keep her heart under lock and key?

Pros And My Favourite Parts

There’s something very familiar about Sabine and Abby. They’re the proverbial ice queen and naïve younger woman, yet they feel fresh and unique. Of course, the sexy chemistry between them is palpable, yet my favorite parts of the story are the awkward moments when Sabine is knocked off her game and left a little overwhelmed by Abby’s sincere goodness. There’s nothing sweeter than watching an ice queen melt and McKay writes it beautifully. It’s not often I read a novella in which the story has enough room to breathe and feel complete. In this case it does just that. And there’s a component I wasn’t expecting. McKay writes some very funny physical comedy showing off her eclectic talent. The Perfect Match hits all the right beats and I’m so glad I picked it up.

Cons And Heads Up

This sweet and clever novella kept me glued to my Kindle when I probably should have been doing something mundane like laundry. I’m definitely going to put a reminder on my calendar to pull this out next Valentine’s Day and all the ones to follow. The Perfect Match has it all, great characters, and an entertaining plot. If only it came with flowers and chocolates, it’d be the perfect Valentine’s date.

Excerpt from The Perfect Match by Milena McKay

These days she went through the motions, because her duty as a cupid outweighed her personal misgivings. Sabine spent an appropriate number of arrows, to keep Aphrodite off her back while still maintaining her diligence in her shots. No arrow was wasted, but the work no longer held any pleasure, any mystery, or any appeal. To have this junior cupid throw so much enthusiasm in her face, to rake open the old, long-closed wounds smarted Sabine. Abby reminded her just a bit too much of her younger self. If not because of her ebullience—since Sabine had not been ebullient even in her youth—then with her curiosity, her thirst for knowledge, and her drive to attain it.

Sabine remembered how she herself had pestered the muses, Apollo, and even Aphrodite. How she had sought the truth and the meaning relentlessly. She’d thought she had all the answers, and knowledge was power. She’d certainly felt powerful enough, especially when she met Elle and they’d found what everyone spent lifetimes searching for.

Yes, Sabine had known power and had known what it felt to have it all taken away from her. Hence it did not matter that Abby Angellini was delectable and insightful. For both their sakes, Sabine would stay true to herself and stay away.
