ever Say Never by Rachel SommersNever Say Never by Rachael Sommers is a slow burn, age-gap romance that highlights how we should allow ourselves to be happy, especially when happiness comes so rarely.

Camila Evans has finalized her divorce. But it’s okay because she doesn’t need love to build a television empire and raise her son, Jaime, alone. What she needs is a nanny, someone who will care for Jaime as if he was their own. But finding someone who is competent, nurturing, and can elevate to her standards has proven difficult. So when a young, beautiful, bubbly blonde walks into her office, she thinks she’ll dismiss her just as fast as the previous candidates. But something about this woman intrigues her, something is different about her, and it’s enough to make Camila give her a chance.

Emily Walker is fresh out of college, bright, a little naive, and new to New York City. Despite her troublesome past, she’s charming, caring, and has been completely infatuated with Camila long before she walked into her office to interview for the nanny position. It’s a little unsettling to be working for the woman she’s had a crush on for years. Even more so when Camila may share those same feelings.

The more time they spend together, the more the sparks of desire threaten to ignite. Professional lines start to blur, but Camila is steadfast in resisting temptation. Soon, they must make a choice: give in to their desires or continue to push each other away and live without ever knowing what true happiness is.

Pros And My Favourite Parts

I love a good slow burn romance, and Sommers executes this one to perfection. I empathized with Emily and her hidden feelings for Camila. In turn, I felt Camila’s heartache at wanting to be with Emily but believing she doesn’t deserve happiness with someone so kind and loving. It’s a dance that titillates the senses and pulls at the heart strings. What makes it even better, is how Sommers utilizes Jaime as a conduit between the two women, making him their voice of reason when the emotions threaten to overwhelm them.

Cons And Heads Up

I respect the decision not to have a sex scene in a romance, but I feel it was needed here. Sommers gives us potent sexual tension between Emily and Camila, not to mention extremely sensual kissing scenes, I felt they should’ve had a physical representation that was a culmination of putting aside their hang-ups and finally going for it.

The Conclusion

This is a great debut by Sommers. She captures the essence of a slow burn romance by making the journey just as fun as the destination. You’ll feel the emotions of Emily and Camila as they dance around and toward each other, and if you’re anything like me, you might get a little emotional before you reach the end.

TLDR (too long didn’t read)

A beautiful, sexually charged, slow-burn romance that makes you fall in love with the two women as much as they love each other.

Excerpt from Never Say Never by Rachael Sommers

“Where is my eleven o’clock?” Camila asked again.

Her first three interviews had all been disasters, and [she] was in a sour mood. She almost felt sorry for the last unlucky soul who had interviewed. She was starting to wonder if she was going to have to give up her search and keep bringing Jaime to work with her.

She was about to ask Jessica what the hell she’d been thinking selecting these goons when a young blonde woman stepped through the door.

“Ms. Evans?” She sounded so chipper, a bright smile and a goddamn spring in her step. And she looked barely old enough to be out of school herself.

Camila stared at her and almost dismissed her out of hand. It was childish, she knew, but she was just so tired, and there was no way in hell this woman was the right nanny for Jaime…

“I’m here for the interview. For the nanny position.”

“Okay, then,” she drawled, leaning back in her chair and adopting a bored-looking expression. “Tell me why you want this job. What can you offer me?”

“I just…I want to be useful, Ms. Evans.”

The girl fiddled with her hands, as if to stop her fingers from trembling. She looked terrified, which was a trait she normally relished in a potential employee but not in someone who was going to spend a lot of tie with her son.

“And I think I could be useful to you. I would like to be useful to you…I think I can do this job and do it well, if you’ll take a chance on me.”

The girl’s sincerity piqued Camila’s interest, but she didn’t want to make it too easy for her.

“Look” – she squinted at the name on the resume – “Emma, I—”

“It’s Emily, actually, Ms. Evans.”

The correction was timid, but it was there, and Camila reappraised her original assessment – maybe she had a backbone after all. For the first time, she studied Emily fully, tried to look past the hideous sweater, glancing up into brilliant blue eyes, and tried not to think that the woman was beautiful because that would be dangerous.
