Fear Street movie trilogy

Fear Street is a horror movie trilogy featuring two main lesbian couples and I loved every second of it.

Film 1: Fear Street 1994

This is a slasher flick so be prepared for an opening sequence with blood and gore. Then we meet the lead character of the first film and the tie in to all three stories, Deena Johnson.

Deena has recently broken up with her closeted girlfriend Sam. They broke up when Sam moved to a rival high school in the good part of town (Sunnyvale) and away from Deena who lives in the bad part of town (Shadyside).

When we first meet Deena she is writing a note to Sam that she places in a break up box obviously filled with Sam’s things.

We also see her younger brother, Josh, who is discussing the latest killing spree with someone on the internet. It’s the 90s so there is discussion on how expensive AOL is which is just one of the fabulous 90s touches. Josh has a theory that the Shadyside killings which take place periodically over the years are as a result of the Fier witch who was hanged in 1666 and she is seeking her revenge on the town.

Deena goes to school with the breakup box and asks her friends to give the box to Sam at the game tonight. They refuse and tell Deena to put her band uniform on and join them.  Reluctant but with no choice Deena does go to the game and there she sees Sam with her boyfriend who is squeezing her butt.

Upset, Deena leaves to find somewhere quiet and Sam follows her. There is clearly chemistry between them and a lot of unresolved feelings.

Later, the bus is heading home and Deena sees Sam’s boyfriend speeding up behind the bus. He and his friends are all wearing masks like the most recent Shadyside killer and Sam is sitting in the car looking terrified.

There is an accident and the car goes off the road. This event triggers a set of well known killers from the history of Shadyside to come after Deena, Sam and their friends.

With a whole set of creepy slasher type killers coming after them can they survive long enough to figure out how to break the Shadyside curse forever?

Fear Street part 2 is set in 1978

In this movie we travel back to 1978 and see the events of a mass killing that happened at Camp Nightwing, not far from Shadyside.

Note: there is very little about Sam and Deena in this one save for a small intro but it does tie into the overall story.

Fear Street part 3 is set in 1666

In this one we travel back to 1666 to find out the true story of the Fier witch.

This one is cool because Sam and Deena appear as the witch and her love. Be prepared, folks, the witch is hanged because she is a lesbian and it will make you angry.

But there is also a sweet love story in this one and we get an epic conclusion to the trilogy with a happy ending for the main couple.

The Technical Side

The films are based on RL Stein novels and directed by Leigh Janiak, know for working on projects like the Scream TV series and the new version of The Craft.

Technically this is a gorgeous series of films, they are beautiful to watch, even with a lot of gore.

I loved the music from the films, each film sported a soundtrack that was true to the era and rocked my world.

I also appreciated that each death scene was unique and interesting, not just the same kind of slashing and bashing as the one before.

My Favourite Parts

This film made me relive the awesomeness of the 90s as well as a million small touches that brought back my tween and teen years.

The chemistry between the main couple was absolutely there, the friend squad was fabulous and all in all great fun.

Heads Up

These are slasher flicks. That means there is a lot of gory, bloody murders. So be prepared for that.

There is also drug use in the first film.

The Conclusion

Sheenas Favourite Movies and TVVictoria's FavouriteIt has all the awesomeness of a great horror but with a lesbian lead who spends the entire series of films saving her girlfriend.

I LOVED IT ALL!!!! I am such a fan of good horror and this is good horror. And then to have a lesbian lead makes my heart so happy. And then to have a love interest with actual on screen chemistry – I think I may have died and gone to Sheena heaven.
