Elemental Attraction by K. AtenElemental Attraction by K. Aten is a hilarious fantasy fauxmance novel with great world building and lots of romance. The novel takes place in Mythworld where elves and shapeshifters and other mythical beings live amongst regular humans.

Ellys DeEnsis is a half-elf making her way in the world by her wit and her swords. She’s accompanied on her multiple adventures by her trusted “steed” Roccotári, and together, they have traveled Mythworld together getting in and out of scrapes, always searching for the next paid quest.

Like any world, there is conflict and danger, and Ellys, a follower of a deity whose main tenet is balance, makes her living by contracting her skills as a swordswoman to those who can pay for her services. When Ellys, low in coin and in need of supplies, walks into a tavern for a well deserved meal, she has no idea her life as she knows it is about to change.

At the tavern she meets Aderri, a crimson haired, dark skinned beauty who offers Ellys a job she can’t refuse. The mysterious Aderri needs Ellys not only to escort her to her home in a far off city, but also pretend to be her mate.

Aderri hasn’t been to her home in a very long time, choosing to stay away in order to pursue her life’s work of gathering knowledge. Aderri, a very powerful shape-shifter, has been called home to attend a not to be missed family event. She knows if she goes without the mate she was supposed to be seeking when she left her homeland, she will be coerced into staying and taking on family duties. So she comes up with a plan to be escorted by a faux-mate from another land so that she can leave and return to her studies after the event is over.

Ellys can’t refuse the amount of coin offered by Aderri and takes the job, at least that’s what she tells herself as to why she agrees to be a fake-mate and escort to the beautiful shapeshifter.

Together, Ellys, Roccotári, and Aderri embark on a fabulous adventure, full of danger and intrigue, as they make their way to Aderri’s homeland. Will Ellys overcome her past to find true happiness again? Will Aderri breakdown Ellys’ defenses and capture the swordwoman’s heart?  And will everyone finally stop calling Roccotári a horse?

Pros And My Favourite Parts

I haven’t literally laughed out loud reading a book in a very long time. This book was funny, really funny and I enjoyed reading it immensely. K. Aten’s world building was phenomenal. I had absolutely no problem believing in Mythworld, and elves and shapeshifters and sarcastic talking four legged creatures. The witty banter between the three (yes three) main characters was top notch.

I loved the literal and figurative journey these characters embark on. The love story between Ellys and Roccotári was just as important in this novel as the story between Ellys and Aderri. The strong themes of friendship, bonds, and loyalty permeate this beautiful novel and it was just so well written! Also don’t forget the steam factor and the chemistry between Ellys and Aderri and it makes a wonderful romance novel as well.

I can’t imagine what K. Aten has in store for us when she sends us once again into Mythworld. I would love to see what other shenanigans these three get into. Further, the book introduces us to other characters who have journeys of their own and I can’t wait to follow their stories as well.

The Conclusion

If you love fantasy worlds, steamy romantic comedies and laugh out loud banter, you will love Elemental Attraction.

Excerpt from Elemental Attraction by K. Aten

“I do enjoy our evenings together. It’s strange.”

“In what way?”

“Ellys took a deep breath. “I…I haven’t been this close to someone, spent this much time with someone other than Rocc, since Gwyn.”

Aderri started to reach for Ellys’s hand but pulled back instead. “How does that make you feel? Is this okay?”

A tentative grin crept across Ellys’s lips. Her smile had been known to charm quite a few over the cycles, and the softening of Aderri’s expression indicated that she was no exception to the lure of Ellys’s attractive features. “It is. I feel like you’ve become a friend in a short period of time. I’m comfortable with you in a way I haven’t felt with anyone in ages.”

Hearing those words, Aderri reached across and placed her hand over the back of Ellys’s. “I feel the same way. I know we have disparate histories and experiences, but I, too, have spent most of my life traveling. You don’t make a lot of friends that way, at least not ones you know with certainty that you’ll remember for the rest of your life.”

Ellys inclined her head slightly. “True.”

“And yet, I feel as though we will be such friends. And because of our growing closeness, I think we have a real chance at pulling off this act for my Clan.”

“I can only hope…after all, I have gold coins on our success.” They both grinned.

That evening, Ellys fell asleep thinking about their conversation. On one hand, her growing closeness to Aderri was frightening. She remembered well the start of her courtship with Gwyn. And while Gyneth and Aderri were two very different people, there was something about both that set Ellys at ease deep within her soul. She tried to remind herself that Aderri was naught more than a patron and destined to leave her life just as quickly as she came into it. Unfortunately for her, the reminder was chased by an image in her head of Aderri’s face and the way those two little canines dug into her bottom lip with each flirt and smirk. That night, Ellys dreamed of dragon fire melting the ice around her heart.
