Who I Believe by Jamey MoodyWho I Believe by Jamey Moody is a second chance romance with a strong religious storyline and the most adorable dog and kid.

After being widowed, Rebekah Matthews has moved home to be close to her parents. Her daughter Anna is struggling with the grief of losing her father and so Rebekah enrols her in a therapy program. She doesn’t realise that the program is being run by her first love, Megan.

Megan Neal has always loved Rebekah. They were teenagers when they first fell in love and because of a series of pressures from the church, the belief that it was sinful for them to be a couple and a terrible misunderstanding, they ended up separated.

Both women grew and built lives but always wondered what happened to the other.

Now reunited they must confront the fact that Rebekah’s father is the head of his church, an institution that doesn’t condone same sex relationships and they need to deal with a community that is stuck in their ways.

Is there a way to keep faith and find a way to belong to a church that says you are wrong for loving someone and can Rebekah finally be honest with her parents about who she really is? Can Rebekah and Megan rekindle the passion they once shared?

Pros

This book has an adorable dog, Wanda, and an equally adorable kid, Anna. What’s not to love about the kid, puppy duo?

I liked that Moody tackled the subject of religion and the fact that her father’s congregation didn’t accept homosexuals. It felt realistic and the way the story unfolded felt far more realistic than it would have it everyone just happily got to know her and was suddenly not homophobic anymore.

Heads Up

Religion and belief in the church plays a large role in this story. I felt like it was handled well and it was never a case of this is the right or only way to live.

The Conclusion

Moody writes detailed, life story kind of books. If you enjoy books that really follow the day-to-day life of a character and have little romantic drama and a lot of real life kind of moments then you will probably love her work.

This book is slow and steady. If you want to just exist in the world of the characters and gently have the story unfold in day to day moments then this is a good read for you.

Excerpt from Who I Believe by Jamey Moody

Megan walked back into the counseling center with a big smile on her face and saw Crystal putting the art supplies away. She hurried over to help her.

“Did you get them to their car okay?” Crystal asked.

Megan stopped and looked at her best friend. “What do you mean by that?”

Crystal chuckled. “I’m trying to count how many times you’ve walked clients and their parents to their cars,” she said, looking up and pretending to count on her fingers. “Oh, I know. None!”

“Ha ha, very funny.”

“Of course, none of the other parents happen to be women you’ve slept with… Or have you?” Crystal teased.

“What the fuck, Crystal!”

“I’m kidding, Megan! Come on!”

Megan stopped and felt a small smile creep onto her face.

“I wish you could see how you light up when Anna comes in. And when Rebekah comes in? I need sunglasses to stand the brightness when you see her,” Crystal said. “Before you say anything, it’s a good thing, Megan. I’m not teasing or getting on you.”

“For the record, I have not slept with any of our clients’ parents and it was a long time ago with Rebekah.”

Crystal chuckled. “Is there some reason you haven’t asked her out yet?”

“I’m her daughter’s counselor!”

“Technically, I’m her daughter’s counselor. And in just three sessions I’ve seen a marked difference in Anna.”

“I know. She opens up more every time she comes in.”

“You never did tell me the whole story of that fateful summer,” Crystal said.

“You make that sound ominous.”

“Wasn’t it? You lost your heart.”

Megan sighed. “It was rather clandestine. We didn’t necessarily hide, but it was like we were in our own little bubble.”
