The Rebels of Psiere by K. AtenThe Rebels of Psiere by K. Aten is the third and final installment of the Mystery of the Makers series.

It’s become quite apparent that Royal Connate Olivienne Dracore is an adventurist, not a soldier. But after the events of King Marsh, the people and land need both. Her beloved Captain Castellan Tosh is the most powerful psi the world has ever seen. Together with Olivienne’s protective Shield Team, they seek to right multiple generations of wrongs as well as finally solve the mystery of the Makers.

Writing

With this being the third book in the Mystery of the Makers series, I opted to not read the first two books to provide a review of this book alone. K. Aten provides enough background information at the beginning of The Rebels of Psiere to allow readers to slide right into this story. The language and world Aten created with Psiere is amazing! Along with the help of the map at the front of the book, I was able to get my bearings on the land and was able to visualize the areas discussed. As the story moved along, I was able to follow the paths of the different teams as they separated for their missions. There are a lot of characters and there were times that I struggled to remember who’s who, but that’s probably just me.

Pros And My Favourite Parts

Having not read the first two books in the series, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I knew going in that K. Aten is a fantastic author. I was gripped from page one and immersed in the lives of the characters immediately. There’s enough background provided that I didn’t feel lost, I felt like I couldn’t get enough.

Olivienne was plagued by nightmares that left her feelings shattered. She questioned her decisions and the guilt was eating her up. I felt for her because while she’s still processing the past, she also had to deal with her mother, The Queen, putting herself in danger by trying to smooth things over with the ocean creatures. Olivienne was courageous and curious and she’ll stop at nothing to get the answers she had been searching for.

Castellan was such a dichotomy. She’s a badass soldier through and through but she’s compassionate, loving, and an excellent leader. I appreciated the time that was taken to allow those under her command to listen to and process Olivienne’s trauma. Her soldiers were able to see that it was safe to come forward and share how they suffered because of the events of that same day. Castellan welcomed her soldiers to share and then made it safe for them to get therapy. Her words of acceptance went a long way to promoting a positive environment for her soldiers. Calling them a family allowed them to feel supported and accepted and quite possibly enhanced their abilities.

Olivienne and Castellan we an established couple whose love for one another is apparent in their spoken words, actions, and communication through telepathy (which is so darn cool!). I loved being a part of their continuing connection and their chemistry is off the charts. I appreciated that they could joke with one another along the way. This levity helped to solidify how perfect they were for one another.

Heads Up

There’s an adventure scene with giant spiders. Just in case that’s not your thing, you can easily skip that bit, but I wouldn’t

The Conclusion

The Rebels of Psiere by K. Aten is an exciting adventure complete with altered humans, mythical beasts, and aliens that will keep you turning pages right through to the very end. It has mystery and adventure with compelling characters and a lovely romance. There are bits of humor woven in with the tense and dramatic which is appreciated. I had a difficult time putting the book down and I am definitely going to read the first two books in the series.

Excerpt from The Rebels of Psiere by K. Aten

Shells exploded all around them and the ship shuddered beneath Olivienne’s feet. The air was acrid and thick from a nearby fire, choking her. Another large, black dirigible swung into view and the sharp retort of rifle rounds was interspersed with the louder whumps of the other ship’s rail guns. She was left exposed and unable to duck for cover in time. A body collided with hers at the last sec, taking the shells that would have ended her life. Olivienne screamed and clutched at the black clad soldier, tilting her chin just enough to see Castellan’s dead eyes staring back at her.

“No!” Olivienne thrashed her head in denial even as her screams pierced the air.
