New Brighton by Helen TrevorrowNew Brighton by Helen Trevorrow is a dystopian, sci-fi thriller, featuring a lesbian romance.

Robyn Lockhart has lived in Brighton her whole life and has had no reason to question the way things are. That is until a ship runs aground on the beach during a huge storm. What is the cargo on this ship? And why does she feel a pull towards it? As she investigates she discovers some long held secrets about her own existence and the town she calls home. Robyn soon realises she has a strength of purpose, but will it be enough to help her deal with what is ahead?

Pros And My Favourite Parts

Helen Trevorrow grabbed my attention from the start in this well-written and gripping story. I especially liked the measured and steady way she let the reader into the secrets of Brighton. We learned as Robyn did, and were equally startled. The romance was understated and due to the intense pressure each of the women was under, it had to be put on the back burner. But the author still made us feel the importance of their feelings. I loved the slow tease of each piece on information. A clever, fascinating story.

Cons And Heads Up

There is one scene of torture which could be a problem for some. But it is brief.

The Conclusion

This story is inventive, imaginative and surprising. I was hooked from the start and couldn’t put it down. It was unpredictable, and this is what kept me enthralled. I didn’t have a clue where it was going and found myself desperate to know what would happen next.

Excerpt from New Brighton by Helen Trevorrow

She looks from him to me, and me to him. “It’s the power. There’s a black out,” she says, taking my hand. She pulls me away, and I go willingly. I’m terrified, but her fingers are electric. I let my thumb stroke her wrist, as if by accident. I fix my gaze on her and her alone. “My boss has let me go early.” “Yes,” I say, without hesitation and without being asked. “I’m coming with you.”
