Seasons for Change by KC RichardsonSeasons for Change by KC Richardson is a small town romance set on beautiful Lake Tahoe.

A long vacation weekend is great for Morgan and her friends, especially the nice views of the yummy butch woman at the local diner. Her life takes a turn when she goes home early and finds her girlfriend in the throes of premeditated infidelity.

A quiet life running her diner and living with her dog Jameson is great for Shawn, but she has begun to dream of settling down with someone special instead of binging on tourists. She’s happy to again see the cute woman she met at her diner a few months back and they work on becoming friends. Their friendship grows fast and each harbors a secret attraction for the other.

Writing

There is a lot of good setup to the romance between Shawn and Morgan. The reader gets to know both of the women very well as their solid friendship is built up before anything turns romantic. That feeling of a relationship off to a firm start makes the bumps in their romance believably negotiable. Both characters are deliberate in their thoughts about their own feelings and navigating a relationship and the expectations of others.

The setting of a small town on Lake Tahoe is well used by the author. Though beautiful, there are some inherent dangers of living rurally near large areas of rugged country and wildlife. The small town diner has often been used as a setting for romance to bloom, and Shawn’s seems an especially nice place to hang out.

Pros And My Favourite Parts

The romantic and organic progression of their deliberate friendship plan that turns into a hot romance makes me respect Morgan and Shawn. Both of them want to have a good idea of what they feel they need and want before getting romantic. That kind of honest introspection felt really good to me as a reader.

Friends and found family are important to their relationship, which mirrors real life and gave some spice to the building romance that sometimes gets rocky. Their friends and family are both an aid and impediment and I enjoyed that mystery aspect of what they would get up to next.

Jameson is a darling of a dog, brave, loving, well behaved and used by the author as a major aspect of Shawn and Morgan’s romance.

Heads Up

A pretty shocking infidelity shows up early in the story and is alluded to more than once after that.

The Conclusion

Shawn and Morgan notice each other in Shawn’s Lake Tahoe diner while Morgan is on a long weekend getaway. Life takes some unexpected turns and Morgan ends up back in the area trying to put herself back together emotionally. Shawn wants to finally settle down with someone but has her own baggage to deal with as the two deliberately work on being friends and then fall in love.

Except for a couple of rough patches, both women have a good idea what they want from life and from a partner, and it’s very satisfying to watch the two make a point of becoming friends before their romance takes a hot turn.

Excerpt from Seasons for Change by KC Richardson

“Good morning. Welcome to Ray’s Diner. How many?”

Morgan felt her mouth go dry when she heard the deep timbre of the voice that belonged to the butch behind the register. She smiled at Morgan as she waited for her answer.

“Um, three of us. How long is the wait?”Jane took over since Morgan’s voice seemed to be gone.

“Just about twenty minutes. I promise, it’ll be worth it.”She smiled as she looked at Morgan.

I just bet it would.

“Great. Is it okay if we wait outside?”

“Sure. Can I get a name?”

Annie nudged Morgan, and she faltered forward.

“Morgan.”

“Hi, Morgan. I’m Shawn. I’ll come get you when your table is ready.”

Annie grabbed Morgan’s arm and pulled her outside to Jane’s laughter. Morgan was feeling suddenly warm, and she felt the heat flash to her face. She also felt a little lightheaded, but that could have been from the altitude. Morgan accepted that reasoning.

“Oh my God. Did I just do that?” Morgan grabbed Annie’s arms and she felt her eyes bulge. “Please tell me I just did not do that. Tell me I didn’t go speechless and make a total ass out of myself.”

Annie and Jane were laughing hard enough to bring tears to their eyes. “Morgan, sweetie, you have drool on your chin,” Jane said, which made them laugh harder, and made Morgan want to jump in the deepest hole she could find. She covered her face with her hands and shook her head, feeling the heat on her face.
