Green Flames by Michaela VitzGreen Flames by Michaela Vitz is an age-gap romance between a glass artist and a doctor.

World-renowned glass artist, Sydney Reamer’s life is complicated. She has an estranged relationship with her mother and suffers from a chronic illness. When she meets Dr. Samantha Vays during a trip to the hospital, her life will never be the same.

Samantha is a pleaser who gave up many job offers to return home to work for her family’s medical practice. She’s unhappy with her career and is beginning to have doubts about marrying her fiance not to mention the confusing feelings she has surrounding Sydney Reamer.

There’s an undeniable attraction between Samantha and Sydney who continue to deny their feelings but as they grow closer they wonder whether risking their hearts will be worth it in the end.

Writing

Michaela Vitz does a fantastic job providing the real, gritty details about living with Multiple Sclerosis. I was right there with Sydney from the first page where I was hooked. The pain she deals with on a daily basis is excruciating but refuses to let it stop her from creating incredible art, teaching, playing with her nieces and nephew, walking her adorable dog, and cooking delicious meals. I admire her strength and resilience.

This story has a lot of moving pieces; some could be considered too much, yet I found myself turning the pages quickly, needing to see how it was going to play out.

The descriptive details around the intricacies of creating glass art are a highlight. I learned a lot and was fully able to visualize the processes and the incredible products.

Pros And My Favourite Parts

I love an age-gap romance and then to throw in the proverbial toaster oven and I’m done for!  Readers can feel the pull between Sydney and Samantha from the first moment their eyes connect in the hospital. Sydney’s enthusiasm for recreating the color of Samantha’s eyes in her newest piece is an incredible element of their story. As the friendship between our mains grows, misunderstandings and lack of communication tend to throw up roadblocks but at the core, it’s clear that these two women belong together, and when they finally, finally give into their feelings their chemistry is downright hot!

While Sydney’s relationship with her mother is strained, her relationship with her sister, Haley is vital and one of my favorite parts of this book. Haley is Sydney’s primary caregiver and is fiercely protective of her older sister. Loyal to a fault, she will do anything for her. Their backstory is pivotal to who they’ve become as adults and I love their rapport and banter.

Heads Up

Homophobia, infidelity, and lack of parental support are all elements in this story.

The Conclusion

Green Flames by Michaela Vitz is a fast-paced journey with dynamic main characters, descriptive details, and bits of humor. There are times when I found some disjointedness between plot elements but not enough to outshine the overall story. While there’s a HEA for Sydney and Samantha in Green Flames, there are a few key threads that are not tied up which leads us to a sequel which I’m looking forward to reading. If you’re looking for a real, gritty, steamy, and sweet story, then I’d recommend giving this a shot.

Excerpt from Green Flames by Michaela Vitz

Time was a round clock; it needed to be wound. Where was the key? She would go find it. Sydney stood, then stumbled, forced to grab the bed.

“Gotta find that key.” She transferred her grip to the IV pole, steadied herself, and slowly shuffled through the door into the blinding lights in the hallway. A searing pain stabbed her head, instantly blinding her. “Oww, shit!” She bent over, shielding her eyes.

“Hey, hey, what do you think you’re doing?” A soft voice and supportive arms guided her back into her room.

“The key. I musht find the key for the clock. Pleashe help me,” Sydney slurred.

“I’m here, Sydney.” Dr. Vays pulled back the covers, gently helping Sydney back into bed. “Try to rest a bit. I’ll help you when you wake up,” she promised.

That smell? The power of scent – her kryptonite! Even within her cloud of fog, Sydney picked up on the smell that surrounded her: light, breezy, the outdoors…

She was floating in the air when her eyes slowly opened and saw the most amazing color of green. Where did this color come from? Why had she never dipped her molten glass into this color to create a fantastic piece of art? She needed to replicate it. Where is my camera? She needed to capture this color; for Sydney color was her vocation, her passion.
