Femme Like Her by Fiona ZeddeFemme Like Her by Fiona Zedde is a dramatic romance for everyone who loves a femme/femme pairing.

Nailah’s life is at a crossroads. Her job sucks, she’s single, and the only person she’s interested in lately is uber femme Scottie who took her on half a date then disappeared. That’s only one problem though because Nailah doesn’t date femmes.

When Nailah bumps into Scottie in a lingerie boutique, all her feelings bubble back to the surface. Scottie is hot, mysterious, and just dominant enough to really get Nailah’s attention.

Can Nailah overcome her own hang-ups about dating another femme? What about the secret that Scottie seems to be keeping from her?

The Characters

The novel is written from the limited point of view of Nailah so we get a far better idea of who Nailah is than we do Scottie. This can be both a blessing and a curse. It’s refreshing to have all our information about Scottie come from Nailah because it feels a little more exciting and authentic to what dating is like but it also means that we don’t know very much about Scottie.

What I learned about Scottie, I liked. She’s very caring and the little things she does to make Nailah feel comfortable in her home are just so sweet. Even without her inner monologue, I’d love to hang out with her.

Unfortunately, Nailah ends up coming across as a little self-centred and very passive in her life. We are our own harshest critics and missing out on Scottie’s perspective made it difficult for me to forgive some of Nailah’s behaviors. From the very start of the book she’s in a terrible situation with work but she never makes any moves to change this despite recognizing it’s a problem. She is constantly happy to go along with whatever others suggest, be it her friend or Scottie. I would have loved to see her grow as the novel progressed into a more active participant in her own life who is making her own decisions rather than going along with others.

The Writing Style

Zedde’s sex scenes are fabulous. For that alone, I’m giving her major kudos. While this isn’t an erotic romance, I still love to find a novel with some sex that leaves me ready for a cold shower, and this did not disappoint. You also don’t have to wait very long to get to it.

My Favourite Parts

Nailah’s butch best friend Pauline is such an asset to this novel. While there was a lot I enjoyed, this is one thing I hadn’t touched on yet and wanted to. Pauline is to put it simply… a train wreck. She’s this Groupon obsessed butch who tends to pick the woman with the most issues and take her home, leading to plenty of hilarious moments during the novel.

The Conclusion

If you enjoy two femme women having some steamy sex, buy this book. If you like femme/femme pairings, buy this book. If you love a mysterious and sometimes unattainable woman, buy this book. Hopefully you get the idea. The only reason I’d steer away from this book is if you’re not looking for a romance.

TLDR (too long didn’t read)

Femme Like Her is a femme/femme contemporary romance with plenty of drama and some great sex scenes that is well worth a read.

Excerpt from Femme Like Her by Fiona Zedde

She doesn’t call me that night. In my bed after a shower and with my head still spinning from the three drinks and teeth-rattling music, I spare the femme’s fearless approach far too much thought before falling into the quick sleep of the thoroughly drunk.

The next day comes with the expected hangover and, after OD’ing on aspirin and coffee, I leave my house for brunch with some sad soon to be ex-coworkers. I pretty much forget about the bad night of Grouponing until I get a call from an unfamiliar number on the way home from the restaurant.

“Do you remember me?” Again she skips the usual greeting. And it’s because of this more than the sound of her voice that I remember who she is. But this doesn’t mean I know how to respond. “What?”

“Oh, you don’t remember. That’s too bad.” Her voice comes out low and amused, not at all insulted. “Are you free tonight? I’d like the chance to stimulate your memory.”

Stopped at a traffic light, I stare down at the phone with my mouth open. Is this chick for real?

“How do you even know I’m gay?” I ask, knowing what she was going to say before she says it.

“That big stud you were with gave me a clue,” she says, confirming my assumption. “Mostly when she gave up your number so quickly.” Her low laugh rolls over me through the phone. “So, are you free or will I have to duel with your stud for a few hours of your company?”

“I…”

“I’m Scottie, by the way, just in case you haven’t looked at the card I gave you.” I’m still speechless and feel a little overwhelmed. Not even the most aggressive stud I dated in the past was ever this…determined. But the butterflies winging through my stomach tell me I’m not completely uninterested. Strange.
