Falling For Who by Erica LeeFalling For Who by Erica Lee is a young adult romance with a little mystery thrown in that’ll have you awing over the characters and give you one of the best reveals I’ve read in a long time.

Marjorie Madden has it all. She’s popular, beautiful, the best player on her high school’s basketball team, and could get any girl she wants. But Marjorie’s focus is all on basketball and leading her team to victory. Dating isn’t anywhere on her radar until a note from a secret admirer shows up in her locker. The feelings expressed in the letter sparks Marjorie’s interest and curiosity, especially since it’s from a person she knows.

At first, Marjorie is content to keep the mystery going, but as the letters get more personal, she can’t help falling for the writer behind the beautiful words. It’s amazing to have someone support her unconditionally, even if she doesn’t know who they are. But then another person grabs Marjorie’s attention, someone she talks to and interacts with every day. Suddenly, her feelings are thrown into a frenzy, and soon she must make a choice: Continue living the fantasy with the mystery girl or go for the girl who’s been right in front of her all along.

Pros And My Favourite Parts

From the very beginning, I was impressed with Lee’s ability to keep the reader guessing. She chooses to not reveal the secret admirer, referring to them as “the love interest.” It was great getting to know Marjorie and her secret admirer on their own and watch their interactions with each other, not realizing they’re connection goes deeper than friendship. The misdirection was great and didn’t drag on, and the breadcrumbs Lee drops to make you suspect it’s another character are brilliant. I honestly didn’t guess who it was until the moment Lee wanted me to. What’s even better, it makes me want to go back and read it again just to see if I can find those hints more clearly and figure it out earlier.

Cons And Heads Up

I didn’t find anything wrong with this story. It was really well constructed and I loved reading about both these characters and their journey towards each other.

The Conclusion

Lee does a great job of capturing the youth of Marjorie and her admirer, the longing they feel, the discovery of self, and figuring out feelings that are so deep and pure you can’t help but giggle watching them navigate their journey towards each other. If you’re wanting a young adult novel that is relatable to the high school kid in all of us, then please pick this one up.

Excerpt from Falling For Who by Erica Lee

My mind drifts to Marjorie as I drive home. The way she laughs – so loud and bold. The smile that never leaves her face. Her overall zest for life. I can’t help but wonder if she’s truly as happy as she always seems to be. I hope she is. I hate the thought of her ever being sad.

When I get home, I lock myself in my room and begin to write. After spending time with Marjorie, the words flow easily from my pen to the paper.

Do you know how beautiful you are? Do you know that the way your eyes shine brings a light to my life that I didn’t know before I met you? I bet you don’t. How could you?

I want you to know how amazing you are. I know you hear that all the time, but I want you to hear it from someone who wants absolutely nothing in return, except to see a smile on your face…

I promise I’m not crazy. I’m just a girl who admires so much about you. A girl who dreams about a life where I have enough courage to be like you. Having enough courage to ever speak these words out loud to you is something that could only happen in another world, galaxies away. But just know, because of you, I wake up with a smile on my face. I look forward to the moments I get to see you and cherish the time I spend with you. There’s a light in you that makes this world a better place. Please don’t ever lose that.

I rip the note from my notebook, fold it as if I’m actually going to hand it off, then shove it into the pocket of my pants…It burns a hole in my pocket throughout the day. When I see Marjorie and talk to her, it seems to burn even hotter. It sits there, tempting me. Screaming for me to let the words free.
