Dress-Tease by Jae is a short story that highlights the sensuality of getting dressed up in front of your lover.
Lauren has always thought that Grace taking off her clothes was the most erotic thing she ever witnessed. That is, until the night their presence is required at a movie premiere. Now Lauren thinks maybe watching Grace getting dressed has more of an impact on her libido. The slow, seductive, reversed strip-tease gets Lauren’s pulse pounding and her breath catching. Suddenly, this movie premiere doesn’t seem all that important. Now all Lauren needs to do is convince Grace that running late to the red carpet would be good for both of them.
The Characters
Grace and Lauren are the two main characters from Damage Control. Grace is a Hollywood actress who has grown up in the industry. While she has legacy status, she doesn’t have the attitude that one would assume with an actress of her stature. She’s very down-to-earth, longs for simpler things, and does her best to achieve them. That includes living in a small cottage in the Hollywood Hills instead of the sprawling mansion.
Lauren is Grace’s former publicist, now full-time screenwriter and girlfriend. In Damage Control, I felt Lauren had become jaded to Hollywood. It wasn’t until Grace came into the picture that she realized there is something more than what is portrayed on the surface.
Together, both of these women have so much passion for each other and their work. I honestly feel if they truly existed in Hollywood today, they would take it by storm and become the major power players that this industry desperately needs.
The Writing Style
This is something I always love about Jae’s writing. When she really loves a character or characters, she gives us these little peaks into their lives. With Grace and Lauren, we get to see them a few months after they become a couple, yet it’s only a week after Grace officially comes out to the world. This timing is perfect because it showcases how much these two women really love each other and want to be together after the lights fade, the cameras are turned off, and the paparazzi have moved on to the next big story.
The Pros
I loved how Jae made the simple act of dressing up feel so erotic and sensual. I wasn’t sure if she could pull it off effectively. I was happily proven wrong.
The Cons
Way too short. I would’ve liked to have seen if anything transpired after (or during) the movie premiere event.
The Conclusion
If you loved Damage Control, you’re going to enjoy seeing Grace and Lauren again in a more intimate, erotic setting. If you haven’t read Damage Control, then this story will give you enough of a taste to make you want to pick it up. Either way, it’s one short story you shouldn’t bypass.
Excerpt from Dress-Tease by Jae
Lauren loved lazy afternoons in the cottage above Topanga Canyon. Holed up in Grace’s loft bedroom, she could pretend that they were the only people in the world and that Grace wouldn’t be flying to England on Monday to start shooting her next movie…
Up here, they weren’t publicist-turned-screenwriter and a world-famous actress who had outed herself on national TV a week ago; they were just Lauren and Grace. Nothing else mattered when they were here – no movies, no paparazzi, no script deadlines, just the two of them.
Too bad they had to leave their sanctuary in about an hour to meet Grace’s hair-and-makeup artist and then head to the premiere of Nick’s new action film. This was one of the few times Lauren wished Grace hadn’t stayed friends with her ex-husband.
Sighing, she sat on the edge of the bed, put on her wristwatch, and secured the cuffs of her white satin blouse.
Downstairs, the bathroom door opened, and the tapping of Grace’s bare feel across the hardwood floor drifted up. “Are you okay?” Grace called.
“Yeah, why wouldn’t I be?”
“You’re coughing. You’ve been doing that a lot lately,” Grace said, a hit of worry in her voice. “You’re not getting sick, are you?”
Lauren shook her head, even though Grace couldn’t see it. “No. You know me. It’s just my little quirk when I’m tired. Certain activities have kept me up most of the night – and I’m not talking about my writing.”
The ladder creaked as Grace climbed up to the loft. “Are you complaining?”
“No. Never,” Lauren said and realized that her voice had dropped a register. She didn’t regret a minute she’d spent making love with Grace, even if it meant she’d fall asleep during the showing of Nick’s movie.
