The San Francisco Snatch by Kitty KnishZap, Krak, Pow! Holy bolts of lightning The Shocking Adventures of Jewish Lightning #1 The San Francisco Snatch by Kitty Knish is an electrifying and gloriously campy super heroine novella set in 1917.

Shoshanna Steinberg and Ester Green aren’t just hard working women just trying to do their part for the war effort overseas. They are also warriors for freedom and justice on the homefront, bravely fighting crime and keeping the streets of San Francisco safe from the dastardly plots of super villains.

Thanks to a freak accident while flicking a light switch during the Sabbath, Shoshanna was electrocuted turning her into the famous super heroine Jewish Lightning. With the ability to manipulate the flow of electrons, she and her faithful sidekick The Knish Kid, work tirelessly to thwart the malignant plots of such nefarious villains as the Golden Gelt and the Mazel Tov Cocktail.

But when their shift mates and other townsfolk start to disappear, they know something more sinister than they have ever encountered before is afoot. To make matters worse, Shoshanna’s ex has the chutzpah to show up again and put even more strain on the pair.

Every clue they uncover leads to a stranger mystery and even friends and allies seem to be up to no good. What kind of a pickle have the Davening Duo gotten themselves into this time? Can they solve the mystery of the disappearing townsfolk before all Challah breaks loose?

Pros And My Favourite Parts

Hopping hummus this book is full of gem-like exclamations à la 1960’s Batman TV series, but with a delightful Jewish twist. Sayings such as Kicking kreplach and blistering bagels had me snickering and snorting throughout the book. And then there are the names of the super heroes and villains, hilarious innuendos, and ridiculous hijinks which kept me chuckling until the end.

Cons And Heads Up

The writing is uncomplicated and there isn’t an abundance of character development, but it is more about the zany shenanigans they get up to. The plot is purposefully a little absurd and If camp isn’t your thing, you likely won’t enjoy the humour. But if you are looking for a laugh, this novella will do the trick.

The Conclusion

If you are in the mood for a fast and funny super heroine story, and love the cheesiness of the 1960’s Batman television series, then you will dig this book.

Excerpt from The San Francisco Snatch by Kitty Knish

Friends and roommates, Shoshanna Steinberg and Ester Green, were exhausted after covering another double shift. Some of their coworkers had skipped out on the job without notice, forcing Shoshanna and Ester to cover their quotas.

“I don’t understand why anyone would skip helping with the war effort,” Shoshanna said. “Isn’t it strange that our friends wouldn’t show up for their shifts?”

“I’m not complaining about the extra work,” Ester said swinging her empty lunch pail. “But you’re right; it is odd. Do you think we should look into it?”

“It couldn’t hurt,” Shoshanna said. “But right now, I just want to get home and kick off these boots.”

“Maybe I can give you a foot rub,” Ester suggested.

“You do have magic fingers.” Shoshanna winked. “Say, what’s going on over there?”

A large crowd had gathered around the San Francisco Stock and Bond Exchange. Police surrounded the long gray building with their rifles aimed at the front door.

“Looks like trouble,” Ester said.

“Let’s check it out.”

Shoshanna pushed her way through the crowd of onlookers and up to the barricade. “Officer, what’s the hubbub?”

The policeman held up his hand. “Please step back, ma’am, this is a police matter. There’s no time to chew the fat. The villain Golden Gelt is inside.” He sighed and looked to the sky. “I wish Jewish Lightning would show up and put an end to the turmoil. But that’s probably just wishful thinking. But I guess Weill just have to wait out these criminals. It’s far too dangerous to go inside.”

Shoshanna perked up at the chance to bring a criminal to justice. She was so excited that her hair began to frizz out and a static charge leaped off her and shocked the officer. “Ouch! The officer exclaimed and clutched his arm.

Ester saw the spark in Shoshanna’s eye, and the electricity flicking off her body. They both knew what they had to do. “Looks like that foot rub will have to wait.”
